    Narrative for continued HESL status:
The two projects that I spend the most time on are: the Monarch Method (a new classification system that has taken us three years to create and fully implement) and the Monarch HS Reading Challenge which is celebrating its fourth year. At the end of last school year, the roughly 450 kids who had participated in the program over the three years had read more than 1,200,000 pages of outside reading- in addition to required reading, homework, sports, activities and jobs. During this journey, we've seen amazing transformations such as a student who went from an IEP in 9th grade to taking the AP Literature exam and getting a 5. We find that all students across the board (regardless of race, gender, etc) have higher scores in the reading section of the ACT test- especially the kids who have two of the RC teachers during the same year. But, what I'm most proud about are the 20-30 kids each year who had classified themselves as "haters" of reading, yet by the end of the year they (re)discovered reading and for the first time since elementary school are experiencing success in their English and/or social studies classes.

Barnum Elementary School's library has gone from unused to (one of) the favorite places to be in the building. At any time you can find students reading on iPads, teachers finding resources and collaborating, or parents using the computers to apply for jobs. Check-out our Animoto (updated since last posted) and we hope to see you soon!
